A cape as red as rose

Basket swinging, fair voice singing
through the forest Lil Eve goes
On swift sure feet her gran to meet
her cape as red as rose

“Play with me,” a young wolf cries
“I’m all alone in here!”
“No no!” she says and hurries on
“in there I’d disappear!”

Basket swinging, fair voice singing
through the forest Lil Eve goes
On swift sure feet her gran to meet
her cape as red as rose

“Play with me!” he cries again
an adult sleek and fine
“Such pleasures I could show you now
if only you’d be mine!”

“No no!” she says and hurries on
“your evil ways I know
The pleasures that you promise me
would only lead to woe!”

Basket swinging, fair voice singing
through the forest Lil Eve goes
On swift sure feet her gran to meet
her cape as red as rose

“Play with me,” the old wolf cries
“too long I’ve been denied
All my life I’ve sought a mate
no other have I spied!”

“No no!” she says and hurries on
“my heart is pure and true
and will be so till I am wed!
There is no hope for you…”

Basket swinging, fair voice singing
through the forest Lil Eve goes
On swift sure feet her gran to meet
her cape as red as rose

Knock! Knock! her knuckles rap the door
and inside quick she slips
“It’s me,” she calls, “I’ve brought you food
today it’s steak and chips!”

“Play with me,” the grey wolf cries
“I’ve eaten well today!
No ring or cape will guard you now
I’ll have my wicked way!”

“No no!” she says and hurries on:
“for you I truly came!
My married life, I’m sad to say,
is really far too tame.”

Basket swinging, fair voice singing
through the forest Lil Eve goes
On swift sure feet her wolf to meet
her cape as red as rose
