Beneath the Cooling Sun

This one follows A Frightened Girl, Our Hero.

From brink of death wrenched back to life
with alien strength reborn
A savage passion in her heart
she stood to face the dawn

The angel who had mended her
with warmth and golden light
Still echoed in her thawing flesh
though flown and far from sight

So bright the sun! and hot as lust!
what wild, destructive rage!
The power of the star was hers!
the world would be her stage…

chop chop From thunder in the south
the helicopters came
All screaming at the icy trees
their bristles spouting flame

Fierce hail of swarming hornet-lead
came shattering the air
A-scratching at her tender skin
and tearing at her hair

A mist of wood chip blinded her
she breathed in sharp-edged pain
She crumpled to her knees beneath
that unforgiving rain

A net of steel and glowing green
leapt down and wrapped her tight
Between the hard-forged interlinks
shone gems of kryptonite

‘I’m doomed,’ she thought, ‘though just begun
the story of my life
And just when things were looking up
a future, yes, a wife…’

The helicopters circled round
and black-garbed men drew near
She snarled her hatred, gathered strength
she’d make them all pay dear

From brink of death wrenched back to life
with alien strength reborn
A savage passion in her heart
she stood to face the dawn

With superhuman speed she swept
her foes as still as trees
She stopped to watch the wreckage fall
the blood drift in the breeze

‘I wish this power could be mine,’
she said, ‘that would be fun,’
But bit by bit it seeped away
beneath the cooling sun

      Thanks! 🙂
When I started writing Supergirl poems, she was an almost forgotten presence outside comic book fandom. I was on a bit of a mission to breathe life into her beyond the limiting tropes of ‘Superman’s lesser teenage cousin’. The Mistress X saga grew out of that. Now, every day, tumblr is full of clips from the new Supergirl series. I’ve only watched the pilot so far, which was clunky in its plot, but it all looks great as far as Benoist’s portrayal of Kara goes.
