end of days

he was a very clever man
a cleverer man than I
he’d lived a very healthy span
a healthier span than I

the old ascetic loved to think
while pleasures I pursued
his hands were stained with time and ink
while mine were filled with food

pure universal love he sought
I loved each girl I kissed
the path to wisdom long he taught
distracted, much I missed

such foolishness, he said, caused strife
I said I’d done no wrong
he said I’d lived a wastrel’s life
I said he’d lived too long

he said, I’ll mend your wicked ways
I told him, go to hell!
he said, today’s your end of days
and into dark I fell…
