The Railway Show

Round and round the train wheels go
Come enjoy the clattering show
Hot steel tyres on iron rails
Braking screams and curving wails
Timber sleepers under points
Fishplates tight against the joints.

Look closely, though, and you can tell
Bolts are missing, pads as well,
Rails are worn or laced with cracks
Corrugation wrecks the tracks
Welds stand proud or misaligned
Till engineers say, ‘Time to grind!’
